I noticed this the other day. After continued driving, my short shifter (the shifter itself, not the knob) will get hot. This ends up heating the shift bag a little bit. By the way, it's a tenzo short shifter.
Is this common?

It's very common. The lower part of the shifter (lever arm with ball bearings) is just above your exhaust pipe separated by less than an inch in some cars.

Hey, that is something I experience too. Actually, the shifter lever will get way too hot sometimes. I have a DC short shifter I'm not too happy with it because it is hard to shif. I don't know if it's a shifter problem or a tranny problem (I hope not). Anyway, I sure would like to find some cure for the hot lever. The nut just under the boot will actually burn you if you touch it with the tender part of the sides of your fingers! I think I'm going to try a piece of header blanket between the exhaust pipe and the mechanism.

There's a rubber piece around the shifter to protect it from heat of the exhaust. It's either misplace or broken.
